Chalk Streams

3 films for the Chiltern Conservation Board

FILM 1 “What Is A Chalk Stream?

TITLE: Chalks Streams

ROLES: Produced, Directed, Designed and Animation

PROD Co: Broken Antler

CLIENT: Chiltern Conservation Board

Description:

The Chiltern Conservation Board required three films that explained Chalks Streams, how they worked, why they’re important, why they’re in decline and how we can save them. We used a combination of animation, interviews and live-action to help tell these stories.

PROCESS

Initially, we curated a mood board to define the animation style that aligned with our vision. We presented this alongside three scripts. The first two scripts were designed to be voice-over-centric, while the third script was to be crafted from interviews with authoritative figures in the realm of Chalk Streams.

We commenced the production with film 2, laying the groundwork for 'What Are Chalk Streams.' Since it was animated, we were not subject to the whims of Mother Nature and weather conditions. We engaged the talents of the exceptional artist Nicola Hanrahan to create illustrations, which we then animated.

Our scripts were rich in visual descriptions, guiding us on the live-action elements required to effectively convey our narratives.

FILM 2 “How Does A Chalk Stream Work?

FILMING

Filming was carried out over several extended days spanning a few weeks. We strategically timed our shoots to coincide with optimal weather conditions, working in harmony with Mother Nature to capture the best possible footage. We employed drones and ground cameras, navigating chalk streams with guides to identify prime locations.

Whether it was good fortune or meticulous planning, we successfully captured a wealth of compelling content—perhaps a combination of both.

On-site interviews were conducted with carefully crafted questions, aiming to drive the narrative while eliciting authentic and honest responses.

EDITING

Back at Broken Post, the films underwent detailed editing, incorporating animated sequences to complement the overall production. The narration was expertly provided by the talented Eric Colvin, a collaborator with whom we had previous experience. Once the edits were finalised, in-house grading added the finishing touch to the films.
