I Am Rebecca
A film for Energynet & Youth Energy Summit
TITLE: I am Rebecca
ROLES: Direction, Design and Animation
AGENCY: Broken Antler
CLIENT: Energynet
Description:
Based on a true story, 'I Am Rebecca' narrates the life of a young girl residing in an area in Africa without electricity. Throughout her education, she had to study by candlelight. She realized that electricity could bring more than just light to her hometown. This ignited Rebecca's ambition to bring electricity to areas in Africa that lacked access.
STORYBOARD
When we initially drafted our storyboard for this film, we anticipated creating additional scenes and expanding the journey when we started the animation. Our first version was also only half the length of the final film. However, the clients suggested that we should allow the animation to breathe more, and they were right. It felt like a superior piece of work when we slowed everything down, allowing the story to unfold. The initial story also did not plan for a voiceover, so when this was introduced, we had already commenced animation. This meant we had to add extra scenes to further develop the story being told.
PROCESS
Simon Gosling, Energynet, approached us with an idea he had for a film. It was based on the true story of a woman he worked with and felt her story would inspire generations at the Youth Energy Summit. We instantly fell in love with the idea.
We came to the project with a clear idea of how we saw the designs and were really pleased with the visuals (Character design and concept art) we created. The film quickly took shape, and the process was relatively smooth. The film premiered at the Youth Energy Summit and was, by all accounts, a big success.
