I Want To Get Better

Graphics for a Snapchat Original series about mental health

TITLE: I Want To Get Better with Jameela Jamil

ROLE: Motion Graphic Design and Animation

AGENCY: Alaska TV

CLIENT: Snap Inc

AWARDS: Nominated for ‘BEST SOCIAL SERIES’ Edinburgh TV Festival 2023

BRIEF:

To create the titles and all supporting graphics for an 8-episode series about mental health in Gen-Z presented by Jameela Jamil, that both complement Jameela’s personality and also the participants in each episode.

PROCESS:

Working closely with Leila Monks (Showrunner) and Rosemary Baker (Director) we began drawing together a treatment to submit to Snap Originals. The challenge was to portray Jameela’s personality and be sympathetic and supportive of the participants and what they had been through. It had to be stylish but also raw and real.

After the Treatment had been approved by Snap we began creating designs. Initially, to support the editors because Snap’s senior teams need to see a fully polished episode as a WIP we began a frantic turnaround of animations which didn’t gel with what we had proposed.

So we stopped and took a step back and created a sequence that was built upon the concepts and designs we had at the beginning. This was then signed off unanimously by Snap Head of Design and it formed the building blocks for how all the graphics would be created.

We knew that each episode needed to feel part of the series but also distinct to each subject matter and echo the personality of the participants. Jameela’s personality was the series, and each participant’s personality was the show. With this in mind, we began looking at assigning colours and a different title for each episode. Rose had shot so lovelily lifestyle shots with Jameela and these formed the bases for each title design. Then from an extensive colour palette, we looked at each episode and selected two to three colours that felt they belonged to that story.

Talented editors Stephen Olsen and Beth Lishmund crafted the series with Rose and Leila and we had the pleasure of working closely with them all. Snap’s process is unlike a usual TV show, where the mastering of each episode is required with WIP and this meant that there was a lot of work to be done and amends needed to be made quickly to respond to the editor's needs.

It was fast and furious and the team might suggest this is an understatement, but it was a delight working with the Alaska team and we’re very proud of our involvement and the completed series.
